Clostridium perfingens is one of the most prevalent pathogenic bacteria. The morphology and gram stain of the bacteria will be examined. Additionally, symptoms diagnosis and treatment of a disease caused by the bacteria will be discussed. The bacteria’s transmission, treatment and incubation period will also be reviewed. When looking at the morphology of Clostridium perfingens it is bacillus. When Clostridium perfingens is gram stained, it turns a purple color. The color shows that it is a gram- positive bacterium. The distinguishing features of this bacterium is its capability of producing spores and it is an obligate anaerobe; that means it thrives in the absence of oxygen. Spores are one of the most resistant forms of life. Clostridium perfingens is most commonly found in the soil, sewage and in the intestines of the normal flora. It is known to cause gas gangrene (Shimizu et. al, 2002). Clostridium perfingens can be put into five different categories based on the type of toxin that it produces. The categories ranges are A through E. Also, there are four major toxins: alpha, beta, epsilon and iota. Categories B trough E more commonly seen in ailments of household animals. While category A is more commonly linked with human ailments such as gas gangrene (Labbé, 2003). Thus, making Clostridium perfingens most commonly associated with gas gangrene Gas gangrene is a necrotizing infection which ultimately breaks down the skin and soft tissue. It can be described as the existence of gas from under the skin which is caused by the bacteria clostridium. The necrosis is caused by the release of a toxin by the bacteria Clostridium
