Pathya Kunthy Dr. Barrow 11/30/2010 Final Lab Report Introduction The purpose of this lab experiment was to synthesize a cobalt amine bromide compound and to analyze the composition and formula of the compound through a series of experiments. Depending on the synthesis procedure, the compound either had chlorine (Cl-) or bromine (Br-). In this case, synthesis procedure III was used; therefore, bromine was present in the products. The procedure can be referred to on page 18 of the lab manual. The synthesized compound was tested for % halide, % ammonia (NH 3 ), and % cobalt (Co 3+ ). Based on these results, the chemical formula of the compound was determined using the percentages and the list of compounds on page 16 of the lab manual. After synthesizing the compound, the halide (Br - ) percentage present was determined. This was done by precipitating a reagent solution. The precipitate was dried and weighed in Gooch crucibles. The best average % halide was calculated from the weight of the precipitate.
