Sociology Notes 10/7/10 Marx- The Class System: -Captialism: means of production held in largely in private hands and main inventive for economic activity is accumulation of profit. -Class determined by relation to means of production -Two major classes: Owners/Capitalist (Bourgeoisie) & Workers (Proletariat) -Subsidiary classes: “middle class” and “Lumpenproletariat” -Marx’s view of Class Differentiation: -Class consciousness: subjective awareness of common vested interests and the need for collective political action to bring about change -Fale Consciousness: attitude held by members of class that does not accurately reflect their objective position. Weber(Pronounced Vaber) on stratification: -Class-Economic Position -Status Group-Prestige/Popularity -Power–Ability to get way. Interactionist View of stratification The importance of social class in shaping lifestyle Veblen: those at top of social hierarchy convert part of wealth into conspicuous consumption or leisure. Example: Tom cruise’s mansion, Rolls Royce.
