Rebecca Richardson September 9, 2010 Sociology 330 Section 1 Homework Essay #1 Chapter 2 Question #8 (Simmel) Todays city as viewed by Simmel is an environment full of stimuli that can be overwhelming unless one learns to cope with the constant infiltration of sights, sounds, and smells. The sky scrapers towering, the neon signs glowing, and the thousands of people rushing everywhere can suffocate one unless one blocks out every stimuli that is non-essential in everyday life. This may include the sight of dozens of yellow taxis driving recklessly, the claustrophobic feeling of business men and women walking close by, and the smell of exhaust smoke and pollution in the air. Instead, one must only pay attention to the out of the ordinary aspects of metropolitan life surrounding them such as catching a taxi before it starts raining or not stepping on a wad of gum on the sidewalk. Simmel’s main theory is that one will not be able to function in a city without first blocking out the chaos. Simmel also points out the irony of the situation in which one feels completely isolated
