Rebecca Richardson September 17, 2010 Soc 330 Section 1 Homework Essay #2 Chapter 3 Question # 2 Adorno and Horkheimer view popular culture as unimaginative and expected as opposed to high culture which stimulates the mind and invokes creativity in the viewer. Both theorists would agree with Dwight Macdonald who described forms of popular culture as “bubblegum of the mind” because they “require no thought, the pleasure they give is unsubstantial, and they are throwaway and disposable” (pg 80). To Adorno and Horkheimer, popular culture is characterized by the industrialization of culture. All forms of popular culture are made by members of a business committee whose main goal is to sell the most number of products to the most number of consumers. By creating a song, or a book, or a film that can appeal to the majority of a culture, businesses are able to make a substantial profit. In this way, popular culture can be seen as mass produced, with really no real thought or passion going into the product other than the thought of another sale. Products cannot
