Rebecca Richardson Social Psychology 350 Dr. Hult-Lunstad Social Psychology Portfolio Portfolio #1 October 19, 2010 This week I say many examples of social conformity. There are many reasons why a person chooses to conform including cohesion, status, culture, unanimity, public response and no prior commitment. The example that stood out most in my mind related to the idea that the less you know about something, the more likely you will be to conform. I grew up in Oregon and was surrounded by lots of peace signs because there are a lot of hippies living where I am from. My dad discouraged us kids from wearing clothing or jewelry that had the peace sign emblem on it because he had read the history of the peace sign and what it is said to symbol was anti- religion. The peace sign was created in the 60’s where there was a hippie movement in the U.S. The peace sign looks like a cross that is broken to symbolize atheism. Because I know the meaning behind the peace sign I choose not to wear it. I do not judge those who wear a peace sign because I do not think they know what it symbolizes. The peace sign is mostly a fashion statement but it makes me wonder how many of the latest fashion trends have deeper meanings behind them. Entry #2
