Register is tone and style: the words and syntactic patterns used to convey ideas in speech and writing Legally protected classes Sex/gender Age Over 40 National Origin Religion Citizenship Veteran Status Marital Status Pregnancy Family Disability Sexual Orientation Resume – put things in order they want, match their qualifications to yours. Show current employment even if not applicable, MOST I MPORTANT: NAME, CONTACT INFO, objective statement (helps them keep resume’s organized, know what job you are applying for), foreign languages – basic, conversational, fluent; use only relevant information, 3-5 bullets per job – purpose is to get an interview Cover letter – shows you did your homework on the company, you will fill a need, you can hit the ground running, catch opening, solid closing, you focus. In the opening list : what job you are applying for, how you found out about the job, catchy Follow up letter –address it to the person that gave the interview, thank them for interview, say something specific about the interview, use modified block
