Lindsay Ratcliffe English 1101 Dr. Melissa McLeod December 9, 2010 Happy Gilmore As An Epic Hero When we imagine an epic hero, that vision may consist of a man who has great physical strength, has long flowing hair, and grasps a weapon. This vision holds true for epic heroes in the Trojan War not necessarily for modern day heroes. The movie Happy Gilmore portrays an incredible story of an average man who becomes a legend and a hero. Happy Gilmore is an epic hero based on three main traits; the hero is introduced in the midst of turmoil, must undergo a long and perilous journey, and must part take in a battle against the antagonist. Happy Gilmore is introduced as an aspiring hockey player, who has unfortunately failed to make a professional hockey team again. His grandmother will lose the home that Gilmore has grown up in if she does not pay two hundred and seventy thousand dollars to the IRS. Gilmore soon realizes that his long shot is so impressive that he can gain profit from his golf swing. While collecting money at the driving range for his extraordinary shot, he meets his mentor Chubbs. Chubbs tells Gilmore that with a long shot like his, Gilmore could be on the Professional Golf Tour. Gilmore at first rejects his offer, but
