Courtney V. Lyons Paper 1 09/01/2010 To begin with, my name is Courtney Vaughn Lyons. I’m a fourth year Exercise and Sports Science major. I’m also the oldest between me and my sister, and I am a male. I come from a home where my father had the final say, while my mother controlled our finances. I come from a home that raised me to not only have the final say when I have a family, but to also manage the finances. I guess one would call my way of thinking chauvinistic, or patriarchal, but that is simply my upbringing. I have to be man enough to wear the “pants” so to speak. I have to be man enough to put my foot down. As a child I grew up watching my father provide for our family, while my mom stayed home and took care of my sister and I, cooking, cleaning, changing diapers, etc. Once I was of age to watch my little sister, my mother was then able to begin her successful career in banking. At this point in my life I watched both my parents wake up in the morning and go to work, not just my dad. We had a dual earning system. This was when I learned that unlike many of the other households I had seen in my adolescent years, mine was different. My parents had, excuse me, have a legitimate partnership when it comes to decisions, money matters, their children… I didn’t see a man telling his wife what to do. I didn’t see a woman adhering and not make decisions for herself. I saw two people fighting to make a better life for their children than the one they had. My parents played the cards they were dealt with strategy and efficiency, putting together funds, a strong work ethic, and an equally strong sense of moral for their children.
