1. Title:
Static Force Equilibrium Force Table
2. Objective:
To confirm the condition for static equilibrium is that the vector sum of forces is
zero.
To experimentally test the vector nature of force.
To practice manipulating the vectors.
To attain better understanding of vectors.
To find unknown tensions and directions in a system of strings connected to a
central ring.
3. Background:
R=(R(x)^2 + R(y)^2)^0.5
where
R(x)=Ax+Bx+Cx
and
R(y)=Ay+By+Cy
4. Procedures:
Set up according to Figure 3 in lab book.
Then add weights to any or all of the 3 hanging masses and move their position
around the circle until it reaches static equilibrium (it reaches equilibrium when the ring in
the center is not touching the pin).
assign each hanging mass a letter, a b and c so that you will have (force of tension)
Ta Tb Tc and (angle from xaxis) @a @b @c.
Find the experimental value for each of the terms in the previous step.
