Robert Crescenzi 11/5/10 Lab 125 Write-up 1. Title: Conservation of Energy Using Spring-Mass System 2. Objective: To verify the conservation of mechanical energy in an oscillating mass-spring system. 3. Background: For vertical oscillating spring: ME = ½mv^2 + ½k(x0 - x)^2 + mgx x0 = mg/k ME = ½mv^2 + ½k(mg/k - x)^2 + mgx ME = ½mv^2 + ½kx^2 + ((mg)^2)/2k h = x + h0 ME = ½mv^2 + ½(h - h0)^2 + ((mg)^2)/2k 4. Procedures: -( Part 1 ) Take at least 7 different measurements of the masses required to extend the spring to different lengths. Then plot the force by graphing mass (kg) vs. change in length of spring (m). the slope of the line is the spring constant which is in Newtons/meter.

-Attach the large diameter weight hanger to a spring. -Connect motion detector to the port 2 of ULI interface. -Make sure that the ULI switch is ON. -Position the motion detector below the weight hanger (aiming upward at the hanger) the minimal distance from detector to hanger is about 1 meter. -Open logger-Pro, “file lab102”
