Section 2- how do we study analytical tool Review: 2 stories  insider and outsider views Insider: search for a full narrative/every situation is unique o Goal: complete and thorough understanding o As observers or researchers we bring our values and beliefs to a situation  and construct the world around them o Objectivity may be an elusive goal o Variables combine to form a casserole rather than a layered cake difficult to separate and isolate casual variables Outsider: positivist/ social scientists with 4 assumptions o We can use the same methods used in natural sciences o We can separate our values and beliefs from facts o Even in the real world: patterns and regularities waiting o be discovered o By finding natural facts, one can determine the truth When do we select a specific level of analysis? Assume rationality : microeconomic thinking with max benefits/ max costs Assume we know all of our options and can assign values to these When rationality does not explain things-> one goes to other tools (different
