Guidelines for Writing Critical Analysis Papers for COLT 374gm The first thing you must do in order to write an effective literary-critical  essay is to read the text(s) many times very carefully. While you are reading  it (them, take notes and note page numbers for quotes that will help you  make your arguments. Literary analysis requires close, detailed reading. You need to take into  account the ways in which  what  the text says is related to  how  the text  communicates what it does. Look at things such as the choice of one word  over another; the choice of verb tense; the narrator’s perspective; the use of  symbolism and so on. You cannot proceed as if you were reading a  telephone book or a T.V. guide in other words. You are not just stating facts  or plot summaries; you are putting forth an interpretation of what you have  read.
