Chapter 1- Introduction 1) What are the 3 processing operation in manufacturing, give a sentence to describe each. The 3 processing operations are a) Property enhancing operations – changing the physical properties of an object b) Surface Enhancing operations – cleaning and coating on the surface c) Shaping operations – changing the geometry of the material 2) What are the 4 shaping processes? Give a sentence or 2 to describe each. The 4 shaping operations are a) Solidification – starts from melted liquid form b) Particulate – starting from material containing powder c) Deformation – starting from material containing ductile solid d) Material removal – starting material is brittle solid 3) What are the 2 basic groups of metals and 3 categories of polymers used in manufacturing? Two basic groups of metals are a) Ferrous – contains metals b) Nonferrous- does not contain metal Three basic groups of polymers are a) Thermosets b) Thermoplastics c) Elastomers 4) What is the purpose of a property– enhancing process and a surface processing operation? Property enhancing operations – changing the physical properties of an object Surface Enhancing operations – cleaning and coating on the surface Chapter 5- Dimensions, tolerances, and surfaces 5.1 What is a tolerance? A tolerance is defined as the total amount by which a specified dimension is permitted to vary. 5.4 Define surface texture. Surface texture is the random and repetitive deviations from the nominal surface, including roughness, waviness, lay, and flaws. 5.11 What causes the various types of changes that occur in the altered layer just beneath the surface? Energy input resulting from the manufacturing process used to generate the surface. The energy forms can be any of several types, including mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electrical.

5.12 Name some manufacturing processes that produce very poor surface finishes. Processes that produce poor surfaces include: sand casting, hot rolling, sawing, and thermal cutting (e.g., flame cutting). 5.13 Name some manufacturing processes that produce very good or excellent surface finishes. Processes that produced very good and excellent surfaces include: honing, lapping, polishing, and superfinishing. 1) What is unilateral and bilateral tolerances and limit dimensions Three types of dimensioning are a) Bilateral – When dimensions are taken in both the positive and negative directions b) Unilateral – When dimensions are taken in only one direction c) Limit – When there is a fixed maximum and minimum value 2) Briefly describe what the 3 parts of a metallic part surface are Three parts of metallic surfaces are:- a) Altered Layer b) Substrate Layer c) Surface Texture 3) Describe the 4 elements of surface texture Four elements of surface texture are:- a) Waviness b) Roughness c) Lay d) Flaws 4) What is surface Integrity and what are the 4 energy forms that can change surface integrity? Surface Integrity is the study and control of the subsurface layer and the changes that occur in it during
