Sarah Edwards Mr. LaRock OCS 1005 4 March 2008 1. Q: What factors contribute to the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun? A: The sun hits the tropical areas of the Earth, near the equator, at a vertical angle which provides a lot of sunlight in a concentrated area. Also, the thinner atmosphere and lower level of reflection provides more heat. In contrast, sunlight hits the polar regions at a lower angle where it is more filtered by the atmosphere and thus provides less heat to these regions. The Earth’s tilt (23.5 º) is another factor in uneven heating. This tilt gives the Earth seasons, where summer days are longer and hotter than those in winter. 3. Q: Why doesn’t the ocean boil away at the equator and freeze solid near the poles? A: Water circulation moves warm water at the equator towards the poles while the cold water from that area moves towards the tropics. This circulation is also influenced by air circulation.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
