Sarah Edwards Mr. LaRock OCS 1005 21 February 2008 1. Q: What is the latent heat of vaporization? Of fusion? Which requires more heat to transform water’s physical state? Why? A: The latent heat of vaporization is the amount of heat energy that is needed to break apart all of water’s hydrogen bonds in order to convert it to vapor. This amount of energy is about 540 calories from every one gram of pure water, but there is no measurable temperature change during this process. Water has the highest latent heat vaporization of any substance. The latent heat of fusion is the amount of calories, 80, needed to be removed for water to become ice. Temperature does not sensibly change during this process either. Out of these two processes, vaporization requires more heat energy because all of water’s hydrogen molecules must be broken for it to change from a liquid to a gas, whereas the process of fusion requires only the breakage of a few hydrogen bonds. 2.
