Blake 10-27-08 Chemistry Topics More Lewis Structures Shapes of molecules Lewis Structure helps determine REACTIVITY Lewis Dot Practice Ozone = O 3 (Toxic, but protects from UV) ( O-O-O) 1. 3 * 6 electrons = 18 2. O = O – O 3. O – O = O 4. Side Oxygen’s have a higher density then the middle one therefore more reactive 5. 2 Resonance Forms IF 4 + 1. 7 + (7*4) -1 = 34 electrons 2. F – F – I – F- F Incomplete Octets BH 3 1. 3 + (3*1) = 6 electrons 2. H – H – B – H 3. Boron has room for 2 electrons so it’ll find N b/c of it’s loan pair of electrons such as NH 3 from it’s neighbor NO 2 1. Neutral is not the same as NO 2 2. 5 + (2*6) = 17 electrons 3. O = N – O 4. O – N = O 5. Nitrogen has 1 lone electron EX 1: Which has the shortest bond? 1. Nitrogen – ANSWER Can form 3 bonds b/c it has 3 loan electrons 2. Oxygen Can form 2 bonds b/c it has 2 loan electrons 3. Fluorine Can form 1 bonds b/c it has 1 loan electrons
