FINAL PROJECTIntroductionBirchwood Lane Schools currently records all data on paper, such as student information, instructor information, and course information. State and federal requirements now say that Birchwood must move their data to an electronic system and record all new data there. This will be more efficient in data retrieval. To do this, a Database Management System (DBMS) will be designed to ensure that all the necessary information can be recorded. A DBMS is software that is used in: the creation of databases, insertion, storage, retrieval, update, and deletion of the data in the database, and maintenance of databases (Jukic, Vrbsky, & Nestorov, 2017). Making the switch to electronic records will help administration, teachers, students, and parents better able tokeep up with any and all pertinent information. This will also help the schools be more organizedin tracking all their data, lower the chances for mistakes, and allow for quick retrieval of data. Business Case and Gap AnalysisBirchwood uses paper to manually gather data for the school, which can be unsecure, time consuming, and more prone to human error. Having to manually write everything down, file, and search for files is very time consuming. This data needs to be recorded electronically, and there is plenty of information to be included for students, teachers, and courses. For students, this includes: full name, date of birth, full address, phone number, email address, graduation date, courses taken, and courses currently enrolled. For teachers, this includes: full name, date of birth, full address, phone number, email address, hire date, courses taught, and courses currently teaching. For course data, this includes: course name, course start and end date, course category, instructor, and students. In data modeling, entities are what represent what the database keeps track of (Jukic et al., 2017). The entities here would be course data, instructors, and students. Theattributes, which are characteristics of an entity, would be all the information gathered for each 2
