Chapter 14 – Acids and Bases Arrhenius An acid is a substance that produces H + in water. A base is a substance that produces OH - in water. Bronsted-Lowry An acid is a proton (H + ) donor . A base is a proton acceptor . HCl (aq) + H 2 O H + (aq) + Cl - (aq) Cl - is the conjugate base of HCl / HCl is the conjugate base of Cl - HC 2 H 3 O 2 (aq) + H 2 O (l) H 3 O + (aq) + C 2 H 3 O 2 - (aq) HC 2 H 3 O 2 and C 2 H 3 O 2 - are a conjugate acid-base pair. C 2 H 3 O 2 - is the conjugate base of HC 2 H 3 O 2 / HC 2 H 3 O 2 is the conjugate acid of C 2 H 3 O 2 - The conjugate base of an acid will not be a base in water. Bases 1. Metal hydroxide salts Soluble metal hydroxide salts can generally be considered as strong bases . Alkali hydroxides – Ba(OH) 2 , Sr(OH) 2 , and Ca(OH) 2 are marginally soluble. Strong bases – NaOH, KOH, LiOH, etc. NaOH (s) Na + (aq) + OH - (aq) Note that most hydroxide salts have very low solubilities.
