University of Waterloo / Conrad Grebel College: Music 246 Soundtracks: Music in Film Winter 2009 / Instructor: Simon Wood grumble@sympatico.ca Course Outline Course Objective: A historical and aesthetic survey of the styles, trends, and important figures in the development of narrative film music, from the invention of moving pictures to the present day. The course will also include a discussion of the technical process of creating film music, as well as (if time allows) a review of popular music in film and an introduction to music for television and cartoons. Required Texts: Roger Hickman, Reel Music: Exploring 100 Years of Film Music (New York: WW Norton, 2006). Methods of Evaluation: Term Test 1 (February 5 th , 2009): 30% Term Test 2 (March 12 th , 2009): 30% Final Examination: 40% TOTAL: 100% Tests and Exams: The written tests and exams will consist of multiple-choice questions. The questions will be drawn from readings, viewing assignments and lectures (thus it is essential that you attend class!). There will be no deferred writing of tests and exams without medical or similar certification. Deferred tests will be written one week from the original test date. The final exam is scheduled by the registrar’s office. Students are warned that travel arrangements should not be made until the exam date is posted, as no deferred exams will be granted for anything other than health or family emergencies.
