Radical Reformation: Anabaptists Early History Stereotype: Amish Origins in Ulrich Zwingli’s Reform Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz become followers of Zwingli, the reformer from Zurich Grebel, Manz wanted denunciation of infant baptism. Zwingli called a false prophet, compromiser of the Word. o Don’t see baby baptized only adults o Zwingli says that infant baptism is needed Jan. 25, 1525: Grebel performs believer’s baptism upon George Blaurock. o Baptism by pouring o God over country Swiss Brethren formed Opponents called them the Anabaptists (rebaptizers) Desired total restoration of New Testament Christianity Severe persecution-death imposed by Protestants and Catholics. o Burned at stake o Push off cliffs o Considered refusal to baptize infants to be child abuse and breaking social bonds o Third Baptism Anabaptists- killed by drowning Beliefs: Michael Sattler and the Schleitheim Confession (1527) Believer’s baptism (pouring) The only way you’re a Christian is to profess your faith o “I believe” John Calvin practiced infant baptism o In OT: Circumcision for male babies that are 8 years old o New Covenant: infant baptism Infant baptism rejected
