Council of Trent/Catholic Reformation (1545-1563) Sometimes called the “Counter Reformation” Indivdual calls for reform o Erasmus- humanist and dialogue partner with Luter, many shared concerns, but chooses not to break w/ the Church Reform groups o Oratory of Divine Love- a voluntary ass of laypeople and clergy dedicated to prayer, discussion, works for charity and moral improvement o Society of Jesus (Jesuits)- founded by Ignatius Loyola, emphasis on theological education and missions direct obedience to the Pope Council of Trent o Intermittently met from 1545-63 o Reformation of practice, not doctrine (simony and other abuses addressed) Simon Magus- tried to purchased in presence of God o Responds to Protestant charges: Index of Prohibited books included Reformer: Luther, Calvin, etc Protestant Scholars writing in sciences o Affirmed: Seven Sacraments Faith + works Vulgate (Latin Bible) Only read Latin version
