Ingrid Shih REL 1350-29 10 February 2011 Roman Catholic Church– Medieval Period Leadership: Papacy (Pope) Rome is The Apostolic See Pope is the Bishop of Rome Holy Father Pope is the Pastor of the universal (catholic) Church Pope’s leadership is based on apostolic succession of the Pope back to the leadership of Peter The church’s interpretation of Matthew 16:18 o And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it Concept of Papacy Increases in Middle Ages o Pope becomes known as the Vicar of Peter and then the o Vicar of Christ (in essence, this means he was infallible when speaking on matters of religious faith and practice) o Popes became political as well as spiritual leaders (the only stable institution in the West) Beliefs Orthodoxy agreement with the Church Heresy theological error determined by Church but also schism or disagreement with the Church Salvation Provided by God’s grace through the redemptive death of Jesus on the cross “No salvation outside the Church” (Cyprian of early church era) Salvation via grace (God’s love), faith (belief in Jesus), merit (works of love by the believer)
