Ingrid Shih BIO 1305-08 8 September 2010 Cells Cell Theory Cells are the basic units of life Cells are the building block of complex organisms Cells come from preexisting cells Similar in chemical composition Most chemical reactions occur in aqueous solution in cells Genetic information is replicated and passed on Viruses lack cellular structure but are dependent on organisms Studying cells is like studying life on a smaller scale Life if continuous The origin of life is the origin of cells Surface area-to-volume ratio 1. Cubes a. As the cube increases, the volume increases at a much higher rate than the SA 2. Volume of a cell determines the amount of chemical activity per unit of time. 3. Surface area of cell determine the amount of substances that can enter and exit 4. Cells must be small in volume to maintain large enough surface area ratio Microscopy 1. Magnification a. Zoom in but not necessarily clear 2. Resolution a. The ability to distinguish two separate individual 3. Light microscope a. Two kinds: Compound light, Dissecting (Stereoscope) 4. Electron microscope
