Ingrid Shih REL 1310-31 21 September 2010 Exodus 1. Story of Israel leaving Egypt to look for the promise land. 2. Israel has become slave when the previous Pharaoh had died and the new one took control who did not know of Joseph. 3. Moses brings them out of bondage b/c God tells him to do so. God has made a covenant with Israel. 4. Moses goes to the Pharaoh and tells him to let his people go Pharaoh refuses 10 Plagues, the last plague: Death of Egypt’s first born; Israel’s children were saved from the Angel of Death by painting blood on their door frames. 5. This story shows that God keeps his promises and liberates his people Covenant 1. God made a covenant with Moses 2. Moses goes up to the mountains and receives the 10 Commandments: how people should live in relationship to God and to each other, absolute statements 3. Apodictic law- universal command 4. The commandments establish boundaries b/t human beings and human beings with god 5. When did God give the commandments to Israel- after the Exodus a. Why? i. B/c before they wouldn’t know He was a God of liberation ii. Cause and effect for liberation iii. This way, the covenant is the result not a condition for liberation iv. God has high expectations 6. 3 Covenants a. Noah- covenant with everybody, sign- Rainbow not going to reverse chaos b. Abraham- sign- circumcision, covenant- they will be the blessing to the world
