Genesis 25-50: The Beginning of a Family The story begins with the conflict of Esau and Jacob (twin brothers) of Isaac and Rebecca. Esau is the firstborn. Jacob grabs onto Esau’s heel. As they grow up, Esau’s the 2 nd place, very hairy and likes to hunt. Jacob’s the trickster, mama’s boy. Esau sells his birthright for a bowl of soup (wiener soup? XD) after he comes home from hunting. Rebecca dresses Jacob up in animal skin to mimic Esau to trick Isaac to receive the Patriarchal Blessing and he succeeds. Theophany story- the antagonist meets God. Bethel and Penu’el Laban- father of Leah and Rachel (younger) Jacob likes Rachel but not Leah Laban tricks Jacob by saying that he will give him one of his daughters if he works with him for 7 years. After 7 years Jacob receives Leah. He works another 7 years to get Rachel. Rachel dies after childbirth to Benjamin. Before Jacob dies, he requests to be buried next to Leah. Jacob’s name is changed to Israel- “he who strives” Leah
