Lecture # 3 9.29.2010     Polytheism and Belief There is no religious text in Greek Mythology o Hard to understand the relationship between God and Humans o No set of rules for people to follow What we do find? o Rituals: the equivalence of mass  Does that mean we can assume there is a relationship between  god and humans Mistake to say no that there is no intimate relationship  between mortals and gods We only see it in tragedies and when something goes wrong Shows that we shouldn’t import our understanding of belief on ancient  believers o Polytheism means many relationships need to be worked out To want to know how best to live you go to Homer o People looked to  The Iliad  and  The Odyssey  for life answers o Homer was authoritative figure Philosophers criticized Homer for making gods anthropomorphic o
