(46 points) Many proteins bind to DNA using alpha helices that bind to the major groove and recognize specific base sequences. The diagram below shows a region of a protein binding to the major groove of DNA. Two specific residues in the helix that form close interactions with specific bases in the DNA are highlighted. (a) Briefly explain why the major and minor grooves are of unequal widths. One of the interactions between the helix and the DNA above involves hydrogen-bonds between an arginine sidechain and a guanine base. The arginine sidechain is redrawn together with the guanine and cytosine bases on the next page.
