As a result, th e conventional central ized process m anage m e n t arch ite cture does not fit into th e picture of inte r-ente rprise business-to-business E-Com m e rce . W e h ave deve loped a Collaborative Process Manager (CPM) to support de central ized, pe e r-to-pe e r process m anage m e n t for inter-enterprise coll aboration at th e business process l e ve l . A coll aborative process is not h andl ed by a central ized w ork flow e n gine, but by m ultipl e CPMs, e ach re presents a player in th e business process. Each CPM is used to sch edul e , dispatch and control th e task s of th e process th at th e pl aye r is responsibl e for, and th e CPMs inte rope rate th rough an inte r-CPM m e ssaging protocol . An XML based Collaborative Process Definition Language , CPDL, e xtending th e process definition l anguage (PDL), is de ve loped for spe cifying coll aborative business processes. W e h ave im pl e m e n ted CPM and em bedded it into a dynam ic softw are agent arch ite cture , E-Carry, th at w e de ve loped at H P Labs, to e l e vate m ulti-agent coope ration from th e conve rsation l e ve l to th e process l e ve l for m e diating E-Com m e rce appl ications. W e h ave al so inte grated E-Carry w ith E-Spe ak , an inte r-ente rprise com m unication infrastructure product de ve loped at H P. In general , our approach re presents a sh ift from central ized process m anage m e n t to de central ized, coll aborative process m anage m e n t. W e bel ie ve th at CPMs w ill be th e basic buil ding block s for a scal abl e , dynam ic, inte r-ente rprise m iddl e w are fram e w ork . Th e fe asibil ity and practical val ue of th is approach h ave been dem onstrated by th e prototypes im pl e m e n ted at H P Labs.
