Physiological Psychology Exam 1 Review Lecture 1 Blind sight -Phenomenon that happens if (for example) you lose a large portion of your visual cortex (trauma) -Getting information to visual cortex is a multi-step process (eyes to thalamus, thalamus to primary visual cortex) -Primary visual cortex analyzes fundamental features of stimulus it’s involved with (anything in visual surroundings) -E.g., chair -Not consciously aware of visual surroundings won’t see chair -Take chair and throw at your head you will try to jump out of its way (by this criterion, you are aware of your visual surroundings) -Consciousness is complicated -Visual system is built upon a more fundamental, primitive visual system (built to detect moving stimuli) -Eyes and thalamus are still intact send axons to all over your brain involved in parts of vision like detecting movement and other things (other than primary visual features like color and shape) -2 visual systems: (1) phylogenetically, primitive system; (2) highly developed, primate/mammalian system (to detect features/fine details of world around you) -When you lose visual cortex, you only screw up feature system Lectures 2-4 Metabotropic receptors (and G proteins) -Metabotropic receptors (embedded within dendritic wall) themselves are not ion channels -Ion channel that is eventually opened is in a different place, generally close to metabotropic receptor [via activation of g proteins] -G protein co-localized with metabotropic receptor
