Leza Campbell Communication 11.1522 Professor Meyers March 6, 2010 Culture and Communication in Cinema: Coming to America The movie Coming to America deals with many topics involving communications and culture. Among them, the main topics that stand out are in and out groups, social comparison and intercultural communications. This report will demonstrate how all of those elements are viewed in this film. The main plot of the movie is about a young prince (Akeem) who seeks to break the tradition of arranged marriages and the spoils of his lifestyle as royalty. When he first approaches his father with the idea, his father feels that he is nervous about his lack of sexual experience. Upon further explanation, his father feels that he only wants to branch out and travel to just be with different women until he is ready to marry. Never minding what his son is really trying to tell him, he sets up a trip for his son to visit Queens, New York. On his trip to New York, Prince Akeem is met with many
