University of California, Davis Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ECI-173 Foundation Design MEMORANDUM TO: ECI-173 Students Date: January 5, 2011 FR: Jason T. DeJong SUBJECT: Assignment No. 1 (Due by noon Friday, January 14 @ 5pm in Eng III, 2 nd floor drop-off box) Question 1: Select a main article from either the Engineering News Record (ENR) or ASCE magazine, Civil Engineering, from a recent year that describes a project where foundation engineering played a key role. (You can find both magazines in the Physical Sciences Library – recent issues are on the shelves and older issues are in the stacks). “Foundation” engineering may be interpreted in the broadest sense, including tunnels, underpinning, new or old construction, ground improvement methods, or anything else that is reasonably related. Summarize the main engineering issues of concern to this project in a bulleted list or in one or two paragraphs. Your summary should be double-spaced, typed, and contain a proper reference to the article. Attach a photocopy of the first page of the article. Solution to this problem is article specific. Focus placed on identifying and summarizing main engineering concern. Question 2: The video, "An Introduction to Drilling and Sampling in Geotechnical Practice," is available from the instructor’s website ( ). Watch the 35-minute video and review the boring logs for your design project (which you can download from the class site). (a) What was the drilling method used at your project site, and why might it have been chosen over the alternative methods? (b) Were the majority of SPT tests performed with truly standard procedures or equipment, as far as you can tell? (c) Why are some of the reported blow counts only given for a few inches? Why would the engineer stop the test before driving the full penetration length? (d) What types of samplers were used to obtain soil samples? For the samplers used at our site, how would they compare in terms of the amount of sample disturbance that they cause? (e) The water table is not always indicated on the logs. Explain why the field engineer might not have obtained this information with the procedures used at our site. (f) The logs often show a contact/transition between soil types at a depth that is intermediate to the sampling intervals. How would the engineer know the depth at which such a contact/transition occurred without having obtained a soil sample at that depth? (a) Rotary wash drilling was used at our project site. Auger drilling becomes more difficult at greater depths, especially in stiffer soils, because they develop considerable frictional resistance along the auger that requires more torque at the ground surface and slows progress. Augers might not be able to advance through any really hard/dense gravelly layers that are encountered.
