Thus, came our decision to focus on the main computer lab in ARC. Hundreds of students frequent the lab every day and we hoped that by improving some aspect of it, it would make the students experience less stressful and worry Page | 3 free. As engineering students, the course load were faced with on a daily basis is very demanding and to have a small aspect of it simplified would certainly be appreciated. Furthermore, our group would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Luxhoj for providing us with the necessary tools and insight throughout the semester to perform this method study. Not only were we able to come away from this with a plethora of knowledge, we were able to successfully apply what we learned outside of the classroom. This, we feel, is the most important thing a student can obtain. Thank you. The following report analyzes the lab with regards to computer usage and the physical layout in order to address this issue. This study was conducted using various work sampling techniques as well as through layout analysis and the application of work simplification concepts. The objective was to determine an ideal time to use the lab and to ultimately eliminate any time that was spent waiting to use a computer by implementing more computer terminals in order to accommodate more students. Because computers are not always readily available due to constant activity throughout the day, the first part of this study focused on determining a time - or times - when a person could go to the lab and would essentially be guaranteed a computer to use. In order to perform this task, observations were taken each day of the school week during hours of operation by recording how many computers were not being occupied at a given time. After compiling this data and analyzing the results, it was observed that the lab experienced the most activity in the middle of...
