Trisha James 2/7/11 Ms. Chappell English 1102M Where is the Line? Emotionally, we depict a mother as someone who is nurturing, caring, and always there for you no matter what. In the dictionary, it states that a mother is: “A woman exercising control, influence, or authority like that of a mother. ” ( Miriam-Webster) Therefore, the question that is raised is: To what extent do the mothers in the poem “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and the classic movie Cinderella represent what we know to be mothers? The mothers in Cinderella and “Girl” may not be ideal mothers, but they do have certain motherly qualities. The deal-breaker that determines what a “true” mother is, is the motive of the authoritative figure; whether the motive is for personal gain or whether it is for the nurturing and molding of their child. The actions of the mothers in “Girl” and Cinderella also contribute to the tones of both of the stories. It is universally known that the way the mother decides to discipline their child from birth will mold them emotionally as well as their actions. The mothers in the “Girl” and Cinderella obviously have a mental impact on the daughters which lead to their actions and their personalities. In “Girl”, the mother imposes numerous orders towards her daughter in the hopes of making her a “well-rounded” individual, and she makes it very clear that if she does not follow her orders, the mother will be forced to think her daughter is a slut. In “Girl”, the mother used manipulative tactics to take control, for example, the mother repeatedly said that she would think of her daughter as a “slut” if she did not obey her rules. “On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming”, “This
