Nakul Shah Honors Colloquium October 9, 2010 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind examines a peculiar form of first contact. The film delves into first contact with our own thoughts, feelings and memories. We take the adventure of experiencing what it would be like to come in contact with our memories in an effort to eliminate them and find comfort in never remembering a heartbreaking or upsetting event, or in the case of the film, person. The film takes place in the character Joel’s mind, as he attempts to eliminate the memory of his former love Clementine from his mind to cope with the loss of her after the end of their relationship. The film begins in a railroad car where Joel and Clementine strike up a conversation. The two seem to be a suitable romantic match, until the audience realizes that at one time they were. Joel does not know that Clementine performed a procedure on her thoughts to have any recollection of him eliminated. Joel soon undergoes the same procedure, as the film goes into his mind as it is being performed. The
