Nakul Shah Poverty in the US November 3, 2010 Michael Moore’s film, Capitalism: A Love Story examines the American ideal of capitalism and how it parallels with democracy. Many see the two as working hand in hand, whereas Michael Moore sees the American capitalist system as extremely flawed and the cause of many of our nation’s fiscal and social problems. Our course delves into the situation of poverty in the United States, examining the problem from a historical perspective, how these roots manifest themselves today in the daily lives of poverty stricken families, and what public policy initiatives can be taken to reduce or potentially eliminate poverty. Michael Moore begins from a historical perspective as to what led to the major decline of the United States’ once universal prosperity, and how Americans today are suffering from the unfortunate chain of events driven by the greed and hypocrisy of our free market capitalist system.
