Friday November 12  Colonialism  Imperialism – the policy of extending the rule of a country or  empire over foreign nations and of taking and holding foreign  colonies.   Colonialism – the political, social, economic, and cultural  domination of a territory and its people by a foreign power for an  extended time.   Colonialism is Imperialism in practice.   Reasons for colonialism include: o  Profit o  Power o  Imposed culture o  Ethnocentrism: the “white man’s burden.”  Indirect Rule – governing of colonies through native leaders and  political structures. Sometimes advantageous in places with  successful state-level organization.
