Monday November 15 Ethnicity and Race Ethnic groups: members who share certain beliefs, values,  customs, and norms because of common background. o Markers may include collective name, belief in common  descent, sense of solidarity, and association with a specific  territory. o  Ethnicity: identification with, and feeling part of, an ethnic  group and exclusion from certain other groups because of this  affiliation.  Status Shifting o  Some social identities are mutually exclusive, while others are  contextual. o Situational negotiation of social identity: adjusting or  switching one’s status in different social contexts. Minority groups: subordinate groups with less power and  less secure access to resources than majority groups.
