From the 1980s to present, due to political upheaval in Iran / Iraq / Afghanistan, approximately 3 million Afghanis moved to Iran. This is one of the largest refugee populations in the world. These refugees are primarily Islamic. Iranian government and public chastise Afghans for refusing to adopt contraception. Iranian government and health bureaucracy explains refugees resistance to family planning in religious terms most refugees are Sunni Muslims, while most Iranian Muslims are Shia. Medical anthropologists address the why question: Does the Shia / Sunni split explain this behavior? Interviews conducted among Afghan refugee communities and compared to data from low-income Iranian citizen communities.
