This is one of the largest refugee populations in the world. • These refugees are primarily Islamic. • Iranian government and public chastise Afghans for refusing to adopt contraception. • Iranian government and health bureaucracy explains refugees’ resistance to family planning in religious terms – most refugees are Sunni Muslims, while most Iranian Muslims are Shi’a. • Medical anthropologists address the “why” question: Does the Shi’a / Sunni split explain this behavior? • Interviews conducted among Afghan refugee communities and compared to data from low-income Iranian citizen communities. • Surveys include questions such as: “How many children are enough?” and “What is the purpose of having children?” •...
