Wednesday September 29  Sociopolitical Organization of Human Groups “Sociopolitical Organization” entails:  How people are organized into groups  How these groups are regulated and managed  Decision making, social control, conflict resolution, etc.  Organization tied to group size, economic behavior, social  complexity, etc.  Social Control and Inequality  Power and authority are not the same thing.  Power = might, while authority = right.  Forms of Sociopolitical Organization  Many different cultures have come up with their own  sociopolitical organizations. Anthropologists look for similarities  (cultural universals) among different groups of people.  Service’s Typology – Elman Service  In 1962, he published a typology of different forms of social  organization.  He said that social evolution was similar to  biological evolution.  His types were the band, tribe, chiefdom, and state.
