Unformatted text preview: Thursday October 21 Election of 1968 • In 1968, President Johnson chose not to seek a reelection after barely winning the Democratic primary against Robert Kennedy. • Nixon, the Republican candidate, promised the he had a “secret plan” to win Vietnam with peace an honor. • This secret became the Nixon Doctrine, which showed Nixon’s opinion that the United States need not be the “world policeman” any longer. • Vietnamization was Nixon’s idea that the South Vietnamese should be doing the bulk of the fighting against North Vietnam. General Unrest • In 1969, there was a march on Washington protesting the Vietnam War, mostly out of unease on college campuses because of the draft. • At this time, many of the elite were able to avoid being drafted into the war, so Nixon instated the draft lottery , which called men up by their birthdays. •...
