How does this determine the cardiac
cycle ?

The Cardiac Cycle
•
Contraction of the two atria, followed by
contraction of the two ventricles and then
relaxation is the cardiac cycle
•
Divided into two phases:
–
Systole – when the ventricles contract
–
Diastole – when the ventricles relax

The “Lub-Dup”
•
Sounds of the cardiac cycle that are
created by the heart valves slamming
shut.
•
Lub – As the ventricles begin to contract,
pressure in them rises above the pressure
in the atria, so the AV valves close.
•
Dup – As the ventricles relax, high
pressure in aorta and pulmonary artery
closes the aortic and pulmonary valves.

Measures of Cardiac Health
•
Pulse – during systole, the pressure wave
created by contraction of left ventricle surges
through the arteries of your arms
•
Blood pressure – Figure 50.4
