Every company has a slightly different approach when it comes to brainstorming sessions, but overall most of the concepts are the same. There are many dos and don’ts when it comes to brainstorming in a group to make it as effective as possible. Since a lot of companies do not clearly understand all of the dos and don’ts of brainstorming, brainstorming usually ends up hurting the company rather than helping them. There are many different things that companies ask their employees to do while brainstorming to help generate the greatest amount of ideas possible. Companies, such as IDEO, believe that the only way that brainstorming can be fully effective is if you train your employees on how to correctly brainstorm (Hargadon, 1996). According to Alex Osborn’s advertising firm, before a meeting, employees should be given a brief explanation about the problem that they are trying to solve, so that they can be prepared and focused going into the meeting (Bradbury, 2004).
