CHFD 3710 The elderly white population includes a variety of ethnic groups of European origin They also have more formal education and lower rates of poverty than minority group elders These differences between the majority and minority groups reflect the historical experiences of the minority elderly. Many older Hispanic Americans grew up outside the United States and, compared with whites, had fewer educational opportunities. Older blacks experienced racial discrimination, segregated schooling, and, compared with whites, had fewer opportunities to get higher education Members of the white group will likely have access to and make the most use of formal support systems. These systems include government programs, as well as community centers and ethnic associations Minority groups differ from the white population in mortality, fertility, and migration Some Hispanic elderly come from Cuba; others come from Puerto Rico, Latin America, and Europe.
