CHFD 3710 Loneliness comes about when a person feels a relational deficit or a gap between the number of relationships desired and the number he or she has Programs that promote social participation also reduce loneliness Technology can also help older people combat loneliness. Cell phones and the Internet can help people to stay in touch with relatives and friends Some people adapt to social isolation and enjoy being alone, but others prefer a more active and engaged social life Loneliness puts a person at risk for other problems Research shows that loneliness and poor health often go together Older people, compared with younger people, show less tolerance for alcohol, worse damage to health from alcohol use, and an increased chance of alcohol and drug interaction Research reports two types of older problem drinkers: early onset and late onset Early onset drinkers begin alcohol abuse in their middle years. These people make up about two-thirds of older alcoholics
