06 NOV 10 MEMORANDUM From: MIDN 4/C Bogdan, USN To: MIDN ENS MacIntosh, USN, 3-1 Squad Leader Subj: REPORT ON A MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT FOR MQS 1. In the course of war, men and women alike are called to a higher cause by the jobs they perform. Often, it moves them in such ways to do extraordinary things at a moment’s notice out of pure selflessness. Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta of the United States Army knows about this first-hand. On November 16 th , Staff Sergeant Giunta will receive the Medal of Honor from President Obama in a ceremony for the actions he took in the Korangal Valley during October 2007. During a patrol in which Staff Sergeant Giunta and his eight-man squad was moving along a wooded ridgeline, they were ambushed in coordinated attack by approximately twelve Taliban fighters on three sides. Reinforcements and air-support was immediately considered by the Americans, but there were no reinforcements in the area and air support was unavailable due to the proximity of enemy in relation to the American positions.
