Specific heat 2nd example Specific heat 3rd example Law of Dulong et Petit The specific heat is the heat capacity per gram. The molar heat capacity is the heat capacity per mole. All solid metals basically take up energy the same way--as energy is added the atoms vibrate more strongly, that is, their vibrational energy increases. Not surprisingly, solid metals have very similar molar heat capacities--about 25 J/(mol o C). This is known as the law of Dulong and Petit. Example. What is the approximate specific heat of Pb? (Its M.W. is 207 g/mol.)

Enthalpy of reaction calculation Exothermic and endothermic reactions An exothermic reaction releases energy to the surroundings and H is negative (the energy of the chemicals in the reaction decreases). Because energy is conserved the energy of the surroundings increases and they get warmer. Conversely, in an endothermic reaction the surroundings lose energy and get cooler and H increases or is positive....
