Kyle Gring 1/30/2009 Sta/ 215 Homework Assignment #1 1. A. If I were to measure the model years of the cars driven by five of my closest friends’ I would choose a census. The reason I chose to use a census is because I had a specific group of interest in mind and had intend to comprise the population of that group as a whole. I know who my five closest friends are and it is very easy to get the whole population for that entire group, so a census would fit perfectly. The reason a sample doesn’t work in this example is because samples only take the measurement of a smaller group of interest. This wouldn’t work in this situation because it was only on my five closest friends and its pointless to take a smaller sample of that population. B. If I were to measure the model years of the cars driven by each student in my statistic class, I would choose a census. The reason I chose to use a census is because I had a specific group of interest in mind, which was my stats. Class, and had intended to comprise the population as a whole. It would not be difficult to collect data from everyone in my stats. class so I could complete my information of model years of their cars. Sampling the students in my class is not a feasible option to me because it would leave out some data and only get a small proportion of the population, which is not what I am looking for in this situation. C. If I were to measure the model years of the cars driven by each student as GVSU, I would choose to use a sample. The reasoning behind me selecting a sample is simple; I don’t have the time or resources to conduct this. Censuses take data from a population as a whole and in this situation it would be everyone who attends GVSU. It would be very difficult to survey all 20,000 students for my measurement. So I would choose to use smaller groups of interest on a smaller scale which is an exact representation of sampling. By using a sample I can improve the speed and accuracy of my measurement because I can devote my resources to getting the most accurate information possible. D. If I were to measure the model years of the cars driven by each professor that I am learning from I would choose it use a census. The reason I would choose to use a census is

Teachers are always there for questions so I do not feel like getting a survey of this particular population as a whole to be very difficult. 2. A simple random sample is the most basic probability sampling plan. In order for a sample to be a simple random sample, everyone must have the same equal chance of being selected. The first thing we need to form this sample is a list of units in the population. In this example the list of units are the names of the employees at WeSaySoCO. The second thing we will need is a source of random numbers. I assigned the employees a number from 1 to 64 and then typed into excel the number 1-64.
