Life Sci 2C03 – Session 6 Session 6 – Neuroimaging (cont…) Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) 1. Good temporal resolution compared to MRI 2. MRI detects levels of deoxyhemoglobin in the blood (high magnetic field) and BOLD images (Blood Oxygen-Level Dependant Images) 3. Deoxyhemoglobin levels indicate oxygen consumption by the brain 1. Deoxyhemoglobin binds to oxygen; more binding more oxygen consumption by brain 1. More deoxyhemoglobin more oxygen consumption 4. Oxygen consumption reflects upon the neuronal activity 5. Series of pictures taken in short period of time performing any task 1. Blood flow to brain is tightly regulated so this is best to sense the level of blood in brain 6. Advantage : determines function 7. Principles of fMRI: 1. Activating oxygen gets transferred to neurons leaving any deoxyhemoglobin showing that brain is active more deoxyhemoglobin active 1. Visual Perception of Speech 1. Person making various sounds w/ specific lip movements
