A synaptic strengthening brought about by prior activation (“ Neurons that fire together wire together) 1. Hebbian Learning and NMDA Receptors A. Glutamate binding to AMPA Na + can enter Glutamate binding to NMDA Ca 2+ can enter Here, Mg binding prevents entry of Ca 2+ as it blocks the NMDA channel B. Stimulate pre-synaptic neuron : 1. Glu binds to AMPA allowing Na+ entry thus depolarizing the postsynaptic terminal 2. Depolarized membrane kicks the Mg 2+ away from NMDA channel C. Once Mg 2+ goes away, Ca + 2 nd messengers enters and does a # of things in cell including ↑ insertion of AMPA receptors = ↑ depolarization of post-synaptic neuron D. Ca 2+ activates certain genes in nucleus (3 rd messengers) that promote strengthening of the synapse including increase in size of the nerve terminal ; More NMDA receptors, more size of synapses, much more permanent results in cell including kindling. Epilepsy etc.
